Section of Route 97 to be closed Friday through Feb. 16

The State Highway Administration will close a section of Route 97 (Littlestown Pike) south of Cherrytown Road from Friday through Feb. 16.

A 100-yard section of the road will be closed so SHA crews can replace an aging storm drain pipe under the roadway. The closure will run from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Feb. 16.

FOR THE RECORD - A news brief in Sunday's Carroll County edition about income tax assistance offered by McDaniel College students listed an incorrect phone number for information. The correct phone number is 410-871-3833. The Sun regrets the error.

Motorists traveling north on Route 97 will detour right onto northbound Old Hanover Road, left onto westbound Cherrytown Road and back onto northbound Route 97.

Southbound motorists will detour left onto eastbound Cherrytown Road, right onto southbound Old Hanover Road and back to southbound Route 97.

Variable message signs, arrow boards, traffic cones and barrels will guide motorists through the three-mile detour route.

Annual Spring Gala scheduled March 6

Target Community & Educational Services Inc. will hold its annual Spring Gala from 7:30 p.m. to midnight March 6 at Martin's West on Security Boulevard.

The band Black Tie will provide music for dancing. A silent auction will be held. Black tie is optional dress.

Tickets are $100 a person. Tables are available from $1,000 to $5,000. Reservations must be made by Feb. 20.

McDaniel students offer help with tax returns

McDaniel College students will offer tax return preparation assistance to students and other low- to moderate-income residents through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program.

The program begins Tuesday, and McDaniel students are preparing to file returns electronically in the campus computer lab.

The students, mainly business and economics majors, are trained by the Internal Revenue Service and receive college credit for their work.

Taxpayers are screened, advised on what to bring and scheduled for appointments. Students who speak foreign languages are available.

Tax help will be offered from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays and from noon to 3 p.m. Saturdays through April 6, except during the college's spring break, which is March 12 to 21. All sessions will be held in the IBM lab in the Lewis Hall basement.

Arc of Carroll County honors 15 staff members

The Arc of Carroll County recently recognized 15 staff members for outstanding performance.

Those honored were Linda Basore, Norma Beam, Jerry Henderson, Amy Knight, Bonnie Kraft, Jimmy Long, Leslie Long, Ruth Lundy, Linda Mooshian, Becki Pearson, Kristen Rohe, Gay Teada, Lisa Thompson, Darlene Wike and Barbara Williams.

The Arc employs 232 people to provide services to people with disabilities and their families.

Interfaith Housing gets $10,000 from State Farm

State Farm Insurance Companies recently presented a $10,000 donation to Interfaith Housing of Western Maryland as part of the company's commitment to community economic development and revitalization.

The donation was made under State Farm's Strong Neighborhoods and Safe Neighborhoods program. The money will benefit Interfaith Housing's efforts to help families achieve their dream of owning a home.

Interfaith Housing is a nonprofit affordable housing developer dedicated to strengthening lives, building communities, and promoting dignity and justice for people with low incomes.
