A weekly briefing on the economic calendar:

Monday

Wholesale trade report includes sales and inventory statistics from the second stage of the manufacturing process. The sales figures say close to nothing about personal consumption and therefore don't affect the market.

Earnings reports: Alcan, Bob Evans, Lincoln National, Playtex.

Tuesday

Earnings reports: Fresh Del Monte, Marriott, Perot Systems, Hughes Electronic, Allied Waste, Prudential.

Wednesday

Earnings reports: Aon, Comcast, Coca-Cola, News Corp., Zebra Technologies, Computer Sciences, Walt Disney, Yum Brands.

Thursday

Initial unemployment claims report from Department of Labor measures the number of filings for state jobless benefits.

Retail sales report from Department of Commerce is the most timely indicator of broad consumer spending patterns.

Earnings reports: CNA Financial, Dean Foods, May Department Stores, Safeway, Unilever NV, Waste Management, Dell Computer, Bally Fitness.

Friday

Michigan Index of Consumer Sentiment issues its preliminary reading for February. It has two sub-indexes, expectations and current conditions. The preliminary January index jumped 10.6 points to 103.2, an 11.4 percent increase.

Trade report for December will be watched for trends. The report for November showed the deficit declining $3.6 billion, to $38 billion.

Earnings reports: Smucker, Sensient.
