James Maurice Eakle, 44, store manager, veteran

James Maurice Eakle, a retired store manager and Navy veteran, died Saturday of acquired immune deficiency syndrome at the home of his parents in Marriottsville. He was 44 and lived in Martinsburg, W.Va.

Mr. Eakle was born in Detroit and raised in Ellicott City. After graduating from Howard High School in 1978, he enlisted in the Navy. He served aboard the USS Fanning. He attained the rank of petty officer and his decorations included the Navy Unit Commendation and Navy Expeditionary Medal.

After leaving the Navy in 1986, he managed a Domino's Pizza store and a Chesapeake Bagel franchise in Reston, Va., until stopping work because of failing health in 2000.

A funeral Mass was offered yesterday at the Roman Catholic Church of the Resurrection in Ellicott City.

Mr. Eakle is survived by his parents, Agnes and William E. Eakle of Marriottsville; four brothers, William E. "Ned" Eakle Jr. of Mount Airy, Timothy C. Eakle of Ellicott City, Thomas W. Eakle of Columbia and Stephen A. Eakle of Elkridge; two sisters, Linda E. Schnell of New Market and Patty A. Sipocz of Ellicott City; his companion, Hans Curnutte of Martinsburg, W.Va.; and many nieces and nephews.
