Rev. William D. Durham, 63, worship leader

The Rev. William Douglas Durham, worship leader and Bible class instructor at Gillis Memorial Christian Community Church, died of heart failure Thursday at Union Memorial Hospital. The Northwest Baltimore resident was 63.

Mr. Durham was born in Smithfield, N.C., and raised in Baltimore's Sandtown-Winchester community. He was a 1958 graduate of City College and attended Morgan State University and the Virginia Theological Seminary and College. He was a graduate of the Baltimore School of the Bible.

Since 1954, Mr. Durham had been a member of Gillis Memorial, where he was ordained by the United Council of Christian Community Churches of Maryland in 1985. He held positions there including spiritual adviser, religious director of the Greenhill Housing Fellowship and instructor in the men's fellowship. He also sang with the Community Ensemble of Gillis.

For more than 30 years, Mr. Durham also worked as a florist for Norman Holt, Roland Park Florists and Gordon Florists Inc., from which he retired in 1984.

Mr. Durham enjoyed gospel music and counted among his favorite groups the Clara Ward Singers, Dorothy Love Coates, and the Gospel Choralettes.

Services will be held at 7:30 p.m. today at his church, 4016 Park Heights Ave.

He is survived by several cousins.
