Checks, installations of child safety seats available each month

Anne Arundel County will be offering free child safety seat checks and installations on the first Saturday of each month from 9 a.m. to noon at a county police facility at 8315 Grover Road, Millersville.

These checks and installations are being sponsored by the county police, sheriff's office, Health Department and Anne Arundel Community College.

In addition, the county Health Department offers year-round car-safety seat inspections at three locations:

Brooklyn Park Health Center, 300 Hammonds Lane, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. the third Thursday of the month. By appointment only. 410-222-6620.

Odenton Health Center, 1370 Odenton Road, 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. the second Thursday and fourth Tuesday of the month. No appointment required. 410-222-6660.

Parole Health Center, 1950 Drew St., Annapolis, 9 a.m. to noon, the first and third Tuesday of the month. By appointment only. 410-222-7249.

In recent inspections, 85 percent of child seats were found to be improperly installed.

Screenings, massage, talks set for Arundel Mills site

North Arundel Hospital will offer the following screenings and activities at its Arundel Mills storefront:

Today, 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., foot screenings.

Thursday, 10 a.m. to noon, blood pressure screening.

Friday, 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., neck and shoulder massage; 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., computerized neck and back screening.

Monday, 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., blood pressure screenings.

Feb. 10, 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., blood pressure screenings and information on heart health; 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., foot screenings.

Feb. 11, 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., discussion on diabetes, diet and lifestyle changes.

Feb. 12, 10 a.m. to noon, back screening.

Feb. 17, 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., foot screenings.

Feb. 18, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., blood pressure screenings.

Feb. 19, 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., blood pressure and lung capacity screenings; 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., blood pressure screenings.

Feb. 20, 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., computerized neck and back screenings.

Feb. 23, 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., blood pressure.

Red Cross is offering CPR, first aid classes

The American Red Cross of Central Maryland will offer several classes in cardiopulmonary resuscitation and first aid this month. Classes include:

Adult CPR, teaching emergency action principles, rescue breathing, anti-choking procedures and rescue for victims age 8 and older: 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. today, Edgewater Red Cross, 3475 Pike Ridge Road; 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Stanton Community Center, 92 W. Washington St., Annapolis; 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Feb. 14, Edgewater and Severna Park United Methodist Church, 731 Benfield Blvd.; 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Feb. 21, Severna Park; and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Feb. 28, Edgewater. Cost: $37.

Adult, Infant and Child CPR, training for use with adult, infant and child victims in a variety of emergency situations, including performing rescue breathing, clearing an obstructed airway and performing one-rescuer CPR: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Feb. 21, Severna Park United Methodist Church, 731 Benfield Blvd. Cost: $42.

CPR for the Professional Rescuer, advanced-level course for those with a job-related duty to act in emergency situations such as lifeguards, law enforcement and health care professionals: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Edgewater Red Cross, 3475 Pike Ridge Road. Cost: $45.

Adult CPR and First Aid Basics, teaching rescue breathing, clearing an obstructed airway, performing one-rescuer CPR on victims 8 and older; and first aid basics on how to treat life-threatening bleeding, burns, fractures, shock and sudden illness: 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. today and Thursday, Edgewater Red Cross, 3475 Pike Ridge Road; 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 14, Severna Park United Methodist Church, 731 Benfield Blvd.; 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 14, Edgewater; and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 28, Edgewater. Cost: $42.

Baby Sitter Training, interactive program for youths ages 11 to 15, giving them knowledge , skills and confidence to care for infants through primary school-age children. Includes reacting to emergencies and sudden illness, playing with and supervising children. State law requires children younger than 8 to be in the care of someone 13 or older. The course will offered from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Feb. 28, Stanton Community Center, 92 W. Washington St., Annapolis. Cost: $65.

Crime Avoidance Training, interactive training that focuses on empowering individuals to take responsibility for their safety. The class, organized around a typical day, covers security awareness, tough-target strategies, safety on the move, using an automated teller machine and responding to threatening situations. Instructors will go to a facility, group or organization at a time that is convenient for the group. A minimum of 10 people is required. The fee is $9.95 per person.
