Programs available on educational options for adults

Student Support Services and Carroll Adult Learning Connection offer free "First Steps" orientations to adults age 16 and older who want to learn about high school diploma options and other educational programs.

Introductory programs will be held:

From 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. tomorrow at Student Support Services and Carroll Adult Learning Connection, 55 N. Court St., Suite G27, Westminster.

From 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Friday at the Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation (Unemployment Office), 125 Airport Drive, Suite 20, Westminster.

From 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Feb. 18 at Northeast Social Action Program, 1046 S. Carroll St., Hampstead.

From 12:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. Feb. 23 at Business and Employment Resource Center, 224 N. Center St., Westminster.

Advisers will be available to discuss learning needs and educational goals.

Schools to observe week focused on counseling

Carroll County public schools will observe National School Counseling Week tomorrow through Friday.

The school system has counseling services available to students at all levels. Counselors guide, advise, recommend, consult and assist with a variety of concerns that students, parents, teachers, administrators and the school community may have.

The counseling program has three major goals relating to personal and academic growth, educational and career decision-making, and interpersonal skills.

Counselors address these goals through appraisal, consulting, counseling, information management, program management, public relations and referral.

Council of PTAs to hold meetings, attend rally

The Carroll County Council of PTAs holds monthly meetings at 7 p.m. the first Monday of the month at the Board of Education offices, 125 N. Court St., Westminster.

Members of the Board of Education will attend tomorrow's meeting.

Members of the council will attend the Thornton Rally at 6 p.m. Feb. 9 at Lawyers Mall in Annapolis. Anyone wishing to go should call Carol Brown at 410-549-6959.

The council executive board will meet at 7 p.m. Feb. 23 at the board offices. All members are welcome.

The March 1 meeting will include nominations for 2004-2005 officers and presentations on "Info-share and Best Practices" and "Barriers to Volunteering."

Volunteer training sessions scheduled this month

Carroll County public schools will hold regional volunteer training sessions around the county this month.

Individuals interested in becoming a school volunteer may attend the session nearest them.

Training will be held from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. as follows:

Tuesday: Winfield Elementary School, 4401 Salem Bottom Road.

March 9: Shiloh Middle School, 3675 Willow St., Hampstead.

April 6: Friendship Valley Elementary School, 1100 Gist Road, Westminster.

Postponed SAT exam rescheduled for Feb. 14

Because of inclement weather, the Jan. 24 SAT test at Westminster High School was postponed.

The test has been rescheduled for 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 14. Students should be in the school lobby by 7:50 a.m.

Open meetings to seek public opinion on budget

The Carroll County Board of Education will hold a series of meetings for public presentation, review and input to the operating budget for the public schools for the 2004-2005 school year.

Meetings will be held as follows:

Thursday: Presentation of the superintendent's proposed budget at 7 p.m. at Spring Garden Elementary School, 700 Boxwood Drive, Hampstead.

Feb. 10: Presentation of the superintendent's proposed budget at 7 p.m. at Century High School, 355 Ronsdale Road, near Eldersburg.

Feb. 19: Presentation and adoption of the board's proposed budget at 7 p.m. at Winters Mill High School, 560 Gorsuch Road, Westminster.

Individuals needing auxiliary aids and services for communication should contact the Office of Community and Media Relations at 410-751-3020, TTY 410-751-3034 at least one week in advance of the date the accommodation is needed.

GED tests, practice exams available to earn diploma

Carroll County public schools offers monthly General Educational Development, or GED, tests and practice sessions for the exam to those age 16 and older who wish to earn their high school diploma.

The two-day GED test consists of five sections: math, science, social studies, literature and the arts, and writing skills.

To take the test, individuals must be age 16 or older, have been a state resident for at least 90 days, have been withdrawn from school for at least 90 days and pay a test fee.

Individuals are encouraged to take the practice test before taking the actual exam.

The next practice tests will be given from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and Feb. 20 at Carroll Adult Learning Connection, 224 N. Center St., Room 101, Westminster.

The next test date is from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. March 11 and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 13 at Westminster High School, 1225 Washington Road.
