Yummy ALL DAY

HOW TO SMELL

February 01, 2004|By Maria Blackburn | Maria Blackburn,Special to the Sun

By now, you've probably heard that candy-scented and flavored beauty products are big right now. Vanilla and chocolate shower gels, lip glosses and colognes are just about everywhere. And why not -- they smell great and pack zero calories.

We love chocolate and vanilla as much as the next girl, but when we're talking about beauty, we're looking for something else, something a little more sophisticated. Here are some of our favorite food-inspired beauty products that go beyond the big flavors of the day:

JUST A SQUIRT OF ORANGE

When the weather grows cold, we smell oranges everywhere. Their juicy fresh smell gets into the pores of our hands at lunchtime and stays with us all day long. Keep the sweet citrus scent around with a splash of L'Occitane's Orange Leaves Eau de Cologne.

Made from a combination of bergamot and petit grain essential oil, which is made from the leaves, twigs and unripe fruit of the Seville orange, the cologne has a fresh, light scent suitable for women and men alike.

It costs $40 for 4.2 ounces. Orange leaves shower gel ($16) and body lotion ($25) are also available at L'Occitane stores, by calling 888-623-2880 or at www.loccitane.com.

NO CREAM AND SUGAR

Mmmm. That rich dark coffee scent that gets you moving in the morning can be part of your daily beauty regimen with a spritz of Black Vetyver Cafe from London perfumer Jo Malone. That's right -- coffee cologne. Inspired by the mix of florals and coffee scents in the aisles of Dean & Deluca, Malone has taken the deep bitter coffee bean and steeped it with the earthy scents of vetiver (a type of East Indian grass), temple incense and sequoia.

Spritz it on for $75 for 100 milliliter or spread the fragrance throughout your home by lighting one of Malone's candles for $65. Available at www.neimanmarcus.com.

Now if we could only add a Starbucks to our home ...

GRAPEFRUIT, WITH A TWIST

The tart twang of grapefruit is refreshing at breakfast. It's also a great ingredient in a moisturizer.

Lather's Manuka Body Butter with Grapefruit and Juniper contains natural moisturizers like Manuka honey, cocoa butter and shea butter to make skin smooth and supple without leaving a greasy residue behind.

The uplifting scents of grapefruit and juniper are fresh and invigorating.

Manuka Body Butter costs $21 for 4 ounces and is available at select Nordstrom stores and at www.latherup.com.

HERBALICIOUS

Sage, that earthy herb that adds so much to poultry stuffing and pasta drenched in butter is spicing up the bath as well.

Parisian home furnishings designer Catherine Memmi has created a foaming sage shower gel and velvety sage body lotion that she says will awaken your senses and leave you feeling calm.

The Sauge duo is one of four scents in Memmi's new Les Vegetales collection. Inspired by the scents of a garden bursting with fruits and vegetables, the line also includes candles and room sprays scented with cucumber, herbs, ginkgo biloba and peppermint.

Catherine Memmi Sauge Shower gel ($32) and Sauge body lotion ($33) are available at www.bigelowchemists.com or by calling 800-793-LIFE.
