Why pay retail?

With online merchants eager to drum up business, the Internet abounds with Web sites offering coupon codes that deliver discounts as high as 50 percent.

CouponMountain (www.couponmountain.com), one of the more established sites, includes thousands of codes from more than 400 merchants and forums where readers can contribute even more codes.

Recent offerings: 30 percent off at Mikasa.com, $150 off a $1,000 furniture order at Staples.com and free shipping at CircuitCity.com.

CouponMountain is among hundreds of sites that troll for coupon and discount codes.

If you're looking for a deal for a particular retailer, you might also try typing the name of the store plus "coupon code" into a search engine such as Google.

Check the fine print, though. Coupon codes often expire quickly, and the deals might come with other restrictions.
