PIRATES: Agreed to minor league contract with former Orioles OF Chris Singleton, who had been with Athletics.

RED SOX: Agreed to one-year, $4,587,500 contract with 1B-DH David Ortiz. He had asked for $5 million in arbitration; team had offered $4.2 million.

ROYALS: Invited country singer Garth Brooks to major league camp as non-roster player; his presence is designed to promote his children's charities, Teammates for Kids.

Basketball

NBA: Fined Jazz $15,000 for mascot skit that ridiculed Lakers F Karl Malone and G Kobe Bryant during timeout of game last Saturday. ... Announced that expansion draft for Charlotte Bobcats will be June 22 (or June 23 if NBA Finals goes to seven games).
