State investigating possible theft from treasurer's office

January 30, 2004|BY A SUN STAFF WRITER

State Treasurer Nancy K. Kopp said yesterday that the attorney general's office is investigating a possible theft of state funds by an employee of her agency.

Kopp said that because the matter is under criminal investigation, she cannot identify the worker, whom she said is no longer employed in the treasurer's office, or provide details of the suspected theft. The treasurer said the amount missing is tentatively estimated at $52,000 but that the investigation is not complete.

"Obviously I am concerned that this office be run with the highest ethical standards," Kopp said. She promised a thorough investigation.
