January 30, 2004

Marita P. Menzies, coordinator of volunteers for Talbot County Hospice, died of an aneurysm Jan. 23 at University of Maryland Medical Center. The Easton resident was 56.

Born Marita Ann Peck and raised in Bronxville, N.Y., she was a 1967 graduate of Mount Ida Junior College in Boston, where she earned an associate's degree. She worked for General Foods Corp. in New York City before her marriage in 1969 to R. Michael S. Menzies, president of Easton Bank & Trust Co.

She moved to Easton in 1976 and worked as a real estate agent for Nily Realty for several years, and later owned and operated Marita's Fine Linens and Lingerie.

While living in Frederick during the 1990s, Mrs. Menzies owned and operated the Frederick Decorating Den franchise and was active in the Carroll Creek Rotary Club.

Mrs. Menzies returned to Easton in 1999, and since that time had worked with Talbot County Hospice.

"Her gentle and graceful manner and ability to listen with great compassion were ideal qualities for hospice work," said Liz Freedlander, executive director of the hospice. "The entire hospice family will always remember her contribution to our cause."

She was a communicant and Altar Guild member at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Oxford.

Services were Tuesday.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Menzies is survived by two sons, R. Michael S. Menzies Jr. of Estacade, Ore., and Wade Callender Menzies of Charlotte, N.C.; and a brother, George R. Peck of San Francisco.
