THOMAS I. SMITH, SR., Age 70, of Duncannon, PA, formerly of New Park, PA, died Friday, January 23, 2004 at the York Hospital. He was the husband of Mary Lou (Kern) Smith to whom he was married 45 years. Mr. Smith was born in Hanover on November 17, 1933. Son of the late Charles E. and Helena M. (Mattingly) Smith. He was a retired owner of the former Toms Super Thrift in Delta. He was formerly employed as a retail field counsellor for PA & S County Meat Dealers Assn. and also a former board member of the National Grocers Assn. and the Penn State Atomic Energy Committee. He was a US Army veteran. He was a member of Saints Peter and Paul Roman Catholic Church Mission, 1952 graduate of York Catholic High School, Knights of Columbus Council 1530, Newport American Legion and a former member and past president of the Mason Dixon Lions Club. Mr. Smith is also survived by three sons, Patrick R. Smith of Garland, TX, David M. Smith of Fawn Grove and Thomas I. Smith, Jr. of New Freedom. Six grandchildren, two sisters, Mary Teresa Kauffman of York and Kay C. Witkowski of Frankford, ILL. A brother James E. Smith of West Pueblo, CO. He was predeceased by two brothers, Harry "Butch" Smith and Andrew M. Smith and two sisters, Dena Marie Smith and Ann Oerman. Viewing will be 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 P.M. Tuesday at the John W. Keffer Funeral Home, Inc., 2114 W. Market St., York with a Rosary recitation at 6 P.M. A Requiem Mass will be held 10:30 A.M. Wednesday at Saints Peter and Paul Roman Catholic Mission, 129 S. Beaver St., York, with the Rev. Philip Stark as celebrant. Burial will be 11 A.M. Thursday at Indlandtown Gap National Cemetery with full military honors.
