January 23, 2004|BY A SUN STAFF WRITER

A 31-year-old Washington man died yesterday morning in Jessup after he used the shoulder lane to pass a truck and lost control of his Mercury Sable while re-entering traffic, Howard County police say.

Police said that Michael James Watson, 31, of Galveston Road was traveling south on Dorsey Run Road when he passed a large box truck on the right shoulder at a high speed and crashed upon re-entering traffic, police said.

His car traveled across the northbound lane, hit an embankment and overturned, and he was ejected from the car, police said. Watson, who was not wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at Howard County General Hospital.

A passenger - Randy Mcfail, 36 - was taken to Howard County General Hospital and was treated and released yesterday, police said. No other injuries were reported.

Attempts to reach the passenger and Watson's family were unsuccessful. A police spokeswoman said officers were continuing to investigate the accident.
