S.C. State knocks Coppin out of first

Bulldogs' 63-57 victory, paired with Del. State win, takes away MEAC lead

From all indications, the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference men's race will be a wide-open affair with no team appearing dominant enough to take charge.

That characteristic puts a premium on winning home games, and Coppin State failed in that respect last night, bowing to South Carolina State, 63-57, at the Coppin Center.

The defeat knocked the Eagles out of first place, and Delaware State's 75-59 victory over Bethune-Cookman gave the Hornets the MEAC lead.

South Carolina State (7-8, 4-2 MEAC) rejoined the pack near the top with its 13th victory in the past 19 meetings against Coppin and a split of its trip to Baltimore.

"I don't know where they were," Coppin coach Fang Mitchell said of his players. "But the first day back in school and they weren't here. I know we're a better team than I saw tonight. We played really dumb basketball."

The Eagles (7-11, 5-2) trailed by four at halftime and went on to their eighth loss in that situation without winning.

Their last lead was at 38-37 before two free throws by Thurman Zimmerman (20 points, nine rebounds) put the Bulldogs on top for good. Coppin stayed within range for five more minutes but couldn't find enough consistency at either end of the court.

Top scorer Jimmy Boykin went 1-for-8 from the field and settled for two points.

"He's just forcing things. We've got to get his head back on," said Mitchell.

"We were able to get some stops down the stretch and did a good job on Boykin," said Ben Betts, the Bulldogs' first-year coach. "We thought this was a big game because the conference is so balanced now. If you can get some wins on the road, you should be in good shape."

Nicholas King led Coppin with 14 points, and Raheem Scott had 11.
