Last night's Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference contest at the Coppin Center featured a team with a 4-1 conference record - unbeaten at home - against a team that had yet to win all season.

For the majority of the game, however, it was hard to tell the difference between the two.

Both Coppin State and winless North Carolina A&T committed sloppy turnovers (a combined 44) and were equally bad from the field (both shot less than 38 percent).

Still, the Eagles came up big when it mattered most by capitalizing on the Aggies' miscues, scoring 26 points off the opposition's turnovers - 15 in the first half alone - for a 64-42 victory.

"I can't be happy about the turnovers," Coppin coach Fang Mitchell. "Anytime you have 22 turnovers it's a problem, but overall we played tremendous defense as usual and that allowed us to take control."

Offensively, the Eagles (7-10, 5-1) were led by Kelvin Green's 16 points and Chad Yates' 10.

And although leading scorer Jimmy Boykin was held to eight points, his second free throw with 15:17 left in the game made the senior guard the 19th player in Coppin history to break the 1,000-point mark.

"I'm happy about it, but I wasn't really thinking about that," Boykin said. "I was just thinking about the win."

The Eagles led by 31-22 at halftime and really began to pour it on in the second, thanks to the some big three-pointers from Raheem Scott and Boykin. But, it was some key defensive plays that allowed Coppin to pull away.

During one stretch in the second half, the Eagles didn't allow the Aggies (0-14, 0-5) to score for nearly five minutes, and they closed the game with a 21-8 run.

Coppin wasn't able to find a rhythm for much of the opening half and the Eagles even found themselves down 17-14 with 7:33 left in the first. But, once the Eagles took a 19-17 lead at the 6:41 mark, they never trailed.

Coppin now leads the all-time series between the two schools by 26-14 and has won 11 of the last 14 meetings.
