John Evans, 64, detective, jewelry store

John D. Evans, a retired Baltimore police detective who later established a Florida jewelry store, died of cancer Jan. 9 at a hospital in Daytona Beach, Fla. He was 64.

Mr. Evans, who was known as Doug, was born in Baltimore. After graduating from City College in 1957, he served in the Army.

In 1961, he joined the city Police Department and was assigned to the Northwestern District and later at headquarters. He retired in 1983.

Since moving to Daytona, he had owned and operated Evans & Son jewelry store.

No funeral is planned.

Survivors include his wife of 35 years, the former Christina B. Brewer; two stepsons, Allen Brewer of Daytona Beach and Mark Brewer of Portland, Ore.; two sisters, Suzanne E. Coleman of Ocean Pines and Nancy C. Turnbull of Fort Worth, Texas; one nephew; and four nieces.
