Maryland defensive tackle Randy Starks reportedly will declare himself eligible for the 2004 NFL draft.

Starks, a junior, will forgo his final year of eligibility, according to an Internet report yesterday by the Terrapin Times. He had been mulling over the decision of whether to return since Maryland's 41-7 victory over West Virginia in the Gator Bowl on Jan. 1.

Today is the deadline for underclassmen to declare their intentions.

Starks, a 6-foot-5, 315-pound native of Waldorf, has earned All-Atlantic Coast Conference honors the past two seasons and is projected to be picked late in the first round or early in the second round of the draft. In 2003, Starks recorded 73 tackles and 7 1/2 sacks.

The Maryland athletic department said it was unaware of Starks' decision. He couldn't be reached to comment yesterday.
