Senior center is to remain closed this week

January 15, 2004|BY A SUN STAFF WRITER

The flooded Florence Bain Senior Center in west Columbia will remain closed this week, officials said yesterday. Workers are drying carpets and walls after a sprinkler pipe broke in the ceiling of an exercise room Sunday, pouring out water to a depth of 4 inches.

Arleen Dinneen, director of the center, said she hopes to reopen Tuesday, after the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, if the work is complete. The exercise room where the pipe broke will remain closed for several weeks, she said, until a new wood laminate floor can be installed.

Machines have bored into walls to dry them, and rugs have been dried and treated to prevent mold.
