Birding tour

Birdwatchers and nature lovers should flock to the Patapsco Valley State Park Saturday for "Winter Waterfowl," a guided tour of the Patapsco River running from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

The tour will circle the Halethorpe Ponds, a tidal area of the Patapsco River in which grebes, loons, swans and many species of ducks congregate on open water during the winter. Bring binoculars and field guides.

Participants will meet at the Avalon Visitor Center to carpool to the Halethorpe Ponds. The event is free but pre-registration is required. Call 410-737-0451 to register. The Avalon Visitor Center is in Relay, near Elkridge, at 201 Gun Road. Use the Route 1/South Street entrance.
