Catherine Ireland Henry, 88, pianist, church organist

January 14, 2004

Catherine Ireland Henry, a longtime pianist and church organist, died of heart failure Jan. 7 at the Edenwald retirement community in Towson. She was 88.

She was born Catherine Ireland at her family's home on Gilmor Street in Southwest Baltimore. As a child, she learned to play the piano. But after graduation from Eastern High School, her hope to study at the Peabody Conservatory was thwarted by the Depression.

The longtime Arbutus resident was married in 1945 to Donald D. Henry, a Baltimore Gas and Electric Co. employee who died in 1978. She had lived at Edenwald since 2001.

For more than 30 years, until retiring in 1995 because of failing health, Mrs. Henry played organ and piano at Halethorpe Community Church, where she was a member. She was also the accompanist for many years for the Waverly Men's Chorus.

Services were held Friday.

Mrs. Henry is survived by a son, Donald J. Henry of Towson; a daughter, Catherine Dodge of Columbia; and two grandchildren.
