Tuesday

Notable earnings reports: Accenture, State Street.

Wednesday

U.S. Department of Labor's Producer Price Index, measures prices of goods at the wholesale level.

Balance of Trade report, released by the Department of Commerce, is most widely watched for trends in the overall trade balance.

Notable earnings reports: Apple Computer, Yahoo.

Thursday

Consumer Price Index, a measure of the price level of a fixed market basket of goods and services purchased by consumers, is the most widely cited inflation indicator.

Department of Labor's initial unemployment claims report measures the number of filings for state jobless benefits.

Department of Commerce retail sales report is the most timely indicator of broad consumer spending patterns.

Notable earnings reports: Fifth Third, FleetBoston, Wachovia.

Friday

Federal Reserve releases Index of Industrial Production, a fixed-weight measure of the physical output of the nation's factories, mines and utilities.

Michigan Index of Consumer Sentiment issues its preliminary reading for the month of January. It has two subindexes, expectations and current conditions.

Notable earnings reports: Abbot Labs, Wilmington Trust.
