The last time Loyola College's men won a basketball game, Rider visited Reitz Arena and bowed in overtime almost exactly a year ago.

There was no encore last night, when the Broncs returned to town for their annual Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference meeting on North Charles Street.

Rider (7-5, 2-1) took command with a 12-3 run to launch the second half and was never threatened afterward in handing Loyola its 25th consecutive defeat, 71-59.

Loyola's streak is the longest current Division I slide in the nation. The record for consecutive losses is held by Grambling, 33 straight.

Quick guard Jerry Johnson (game-high 21 points) and 7-footer Steve Castleberry (15 points, 11 rebounds for his second double double in a row) were the primary antagonists to the Greyhounds, who had beaten Rider in two of their previous three meetings.

"A loss is a loss, no matter who it's against," said Loyola forward Bernard Allen, who grabbed 10 rebounds despite playing with an upset stomach that had him sick at halftime. "We just want to get a win, because we think it'll start a snowball effect. [The streak's] a little discouraging , but you can't let it affect you, or you won't even have a chance to win games."

Loyola (0-12, 0-3 MAAC) got off to an atrocious start, committing three turnovers and missing three three-point attempts while Rider shot ahead 12-2 in what turned into a game of surges. But an 11-0 Greyhounds burst produced a 27-24 lead with 2:32 remaining in the first period. Rider answered with eight of the final 10 points of the half, four by Johnson, to regain a two-point edge.

"We started lousy and built a big hole against a team with good guards. Then, we expended a lot of energy getting back," said Loyola coach Scott Hicks. "We're trying to play with basically seven guys, so were flat [in] the second half. Fatigue was maybe a factor later."
