Mike Kessler

Owings Mills, wrestling

The junior notched a hard-earned 5-3 decision over Fallston's Nathan Bachmann on Dec. 30 to win the 152-pound weight class at the Arundel Tournament.

En route to being named the Most Outstanding Heavyweight and helping the Eagles to a commanding victory in the 18-team tournament, Kessler registered two pins and a major decision before rallying from a 2-0 deficit to beat Bachmann, a two-time triple crown winner (county, regional and state), in the championship match.

The younger brother of three wrestlers who have combined to win eight state titles, Kessler is a two-time state place-winner, losing both years to the eventual state champion. He was an All-Baltimore City/County first-team selection last year.

He is 13-0 this season and 85-5 in his career.

Sarah Meisenberg

Severn, basketball

As the top scorer on the surprise team of the season, the 5-foot-6 shooting guard has led the Admirals (10-0) to upset wins over St. Mary's and South River and to a No. 14 ranking.

Last week in the final of the Lady Lions Tournament at Queen Anne's, Meisenberg scored 23 points and had 13 rebounds, seven assists and four steals in a 67-64 double-overtime win over then-No. 6 South River. In Monday's semifinal, the junior scored 34 in an 80-44 win over previously unbeaten Queen Anne's.

Meisenberg, an `A' student, averages 24.0 points, 8.2 rebounds, 6.3 assists and 4.2 steals and shoots 54 percent from the field as the Admirals sit atop the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland B Conference. She also runs cross country and plays lacrosse for Severn.
