Hearing to focus on county school contracts for minority firms

January 07, 2004|BY A SUN STAFF WRITER

An Anne Arundel County schools task force will hold a public hearing Saturday on recommendations aimed at increasing the share of school contracts that go to minority-owned firms.

The task force's draft report, released yesterday, states that the school system struggled to meet goals for minority participation in 2002.

Among the task force's proposed recommendations: the hiring of an outside firm to improve and monitor the school system's use of minority contractors and the establishment of hiring goals for companies owned by women or different racial groups.

The public hearing is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Board of Education headquarters, 2644 Riva Road.

School officials are scheduled to present to the school board today a report on how minority and female contractors fared last year.
