S. George McKeown Sr., 70, executive, volunteer

S. George McKeown Sr., a retired executive and volunteer, died Tuesday of lung cancer at his home in Ocean Pines. He was 70 and had lived in Timonium until 1996.

Born in Philadelphia, Mr. McKeown was a 1955 graduate of the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.

He worked for Yale Industrial Trucks in Philadelphia and, beginning in 1958, in Baltimore. After Yale became a division of Eaton Industries, Mr. McKeown bought the Baltimore Yale franchise, which dealt primarily in forklifts.

After he retired in 1982, he worked for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in Rockville, handling membership services, until retiring again eight years ago.

In Ocean Pines, Mr. McKeown was a member and volunteer at the Community Church at Ocean Pines, the Ocean Pines Kiwanis Club, Meals on Wheels and Interfaith Caregivers. He also assisted with bingo at a nursing home in Berlin.

Services were yesterday.

He is survived by his wife of 42 years, the former Elizabeth "Betty" Watkins; a daughter, Mary Lauren Emery of Minneapolis; two sons, Stephen G. McKeown Jr. and William Charles McKeown, both of Baltimore; a brother, James J. McKeown of McLean, Va.; a sister, Joanne McKeown of Philadelphia; and two grandchildren.
