Great ideas for saving space

Small spaces are no object for Christopher Lowell. The decorating guru and show host proves such in his newest book, Christopher Lowell's You Can Do It! Small Spaces (Clarkson Potter, 2003, $29.95), by Lowell, and available at Amazon.com. Lowell offers clever tips and doable design projects for each small room in your house. Here are a few of his suggestions:

* In a cramped bathroom, use trays and baskets to organize and to save shelving space.

* Although it sounds odd, put large, nice furniture in small rooms. Small pieces in a small space make for a dollhouse effect.

* Attach an ironing board to the wall by the washer. It can fold up against the wall when not in use.

* In the kitchen, use the space above the kitchen sink with shelving that joins cabinets.

* Use overhead space. Put in wooden cubbyholes above the window casements, and fill with books or plants.

Mood lighting

When you think of candles, you generally think of one wondrous scent wafting through the room. British perfumer and skin care expert Jo Malone says forget that. She's created the Fragrance Combining Candle -- a tri-scented candle of grapefruit, jasmine and lime -- which can be lighted individually, two at once or all together. The results, she says, can complement any occasion and any mood. The candle is encased within solid glass on a silver base, and comes with an engraved lid.

The candle retails for $185 (refills are $50) and is available at Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, on their Web sites, or by calling 866-566-2566.
