Baltimore police have identified two teen-agers who were killed Tuesday night in an apparent attempted robbery in the Belair-Edison community.

The slain boys are Isief Gerrard Thompson, 16, of the 3400 block of Woodstock Ave. and Allex Lee Thompson, 15, who lived in the same block in which the shootings occurred, said police spokeswoman Nicole Monroe. Police said the boys are not related.

The two boys and a third male were standing in the 3100 block of Mareco Ave. about 11 p.m. Tuesday when a gunman came up behind them and told them not to move, Monroe said. Isief and Allex were shot once in the head at close range, and the third male escaped unharmed, Monroe said.

Police know of no suspects in the slayings, Monroe said.

The boys' deaths bring to 271 the number of homicides recorded in the city last year, 18 more than the previous year.

In 2002, the city had a record number of juvenile homicides, causing Mayor Martin O'Malley to call on churches, community activists and school officials to join with police in trying to combat violence against youths. Last year, 27 children were slain, compared with 35 in 2002.
