Registration is open for master gardener class in Ellicott City

Registration is open for master gardener training offered by the Howard County office of the Maryland Cooperative Extension. The training will cover plant, insect and disease problems, as well as other topics related to gardening.

Training will be offered from 9 a.m. to noon Mondays and Wednesdays, Jan. 26 to March 31, at the Maryland Cooperative Extension office in Ellicott City. The cost is $130. New and experienced gardeners are invited to register.

Grandmothers for Peace sets series of Tuesday talks

Maryland Grandmothers for Peace will hold a 45-minute "Talkfest" at 1 p.m. Tuesdays, Jan. 6, 13, 20 and 27 at the 50+ Center at the east Columbia library, 6600 Cradlerock Way, Columbia.

Discussion will focus on the meaning of peace and how to achieve it.

Admission is free. Registration is requested.

FluMist vaccine to be given at walk-in clinic Saturday

The Howard County Health Department has received a shipment of the FluMist vaccine and will hold its second walk-in flu clinic for Howard County residents at the Southeastern Health Clinic from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday.

FluMist, a live vaccine, is sprayed into the nostrils, instead of being injected into the muscle, as is the inactivated form of the vaccine. FluMist is approved only for healthy children and adults, ages 5 to 49. People with weakened immune systems or long-term health problems, pregnant women and those with a history of certain allergies, illnesses or treatments should not receive the vaccine.

The clinic is at 9525 Durness Lane, near the Savage branch library.

Screenings, mammograms offered to eligible residents

The Howard County Health Department is offering free screenings for colorectal cancer to Howard County residents who meet eligibility requirements.

The Health Department offers free mammograms to women ages 40 and older who meet certain requirements.

County announces closings for New Year's

Howard County government offices, courts and libraries will be closed tomorrow.

No trash or recycling services will be available, and the landfill will be closed. Trash and recycling routes scheduled for Thursday pickup will be serviced Friday. Metered parking spaces will be free.

Seasonal opportunities listed for volunteers

The Volunteer Center Serving Howard County's Holiday Gift Guide 2003 lists seasonal volunteer and other needs of about 40 nonprofit and governmental organizations.

Warm clothing, furniture, unwrapped toys, nonperishable food, small appliances and other items are needed.

Volunteers are needed to help with holiday parties and other seasonal programs.
