Maryland Transportation Authority Police are investigating the shooting of a Virginia motorist who was found lying outside his car early yesterday on the shoulder of southbound Interstate 895 near O'Donnell Street in Southeast Baltimore.

The man, 25, of Fairfax, was found beside his gold-colored 1999 Honda about 1 a.m. with a bullet wound to the stomach after crashing his car into a guardrail, said Cpl. Greg Prioleau, a spokesman for the transportation authority police.

Prioleau said Officer Courtney Brooks, who was responding to a report of an accident, found the man and called an ambulance. He was taken to Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, where he was in critical condition last night.

Prioleau said that several large-caliber bullet holes were visible on the driver's side of the car and that evidence was sent to the state police crime lab in Pikesville.

Anyone with information is urged to call transportation authority police at 410-537-1200.
