Are You In or Out?

What to wear on New Year's Eve, no matter where you go

December 28, 2003|By Maria Blackburn | Maria Blackburn,SPECIAL TO THE SUN

There are two types of people when it comes to New Year's Eve -- the people who go out and the people who stay in. The going-out types tend to like parties, hoopla and, yes, the occasional cocktail. The stay-at-homes, well, let's just say a tasty pizza, a nice bottle of Sierra Nevada Celebration ale and a good video are enough to make them happy.

We're not saying which group is superior. We're just going to tell you what to wear:

Going Out

What: Little black dress redux

Why: This modern take on the little black dress looks feminine and fresh. A softly ruffled hem and floppy shoulder tie make it glamorous without being fussy. Holly Golightly, eat your heart out.

Where: $148 at Banana Republic stores or

What: Navy cashmere blazer

Why: New Year's Eve is usually the coldest night of the year. Bundle up without looking bulky in a luxurious cashmere blazer. Dress it up or down -- it's so soft it doesn't matter.

Where: $650 at Banana Republic stores or

What: Evening in Paris Perfume

Why: Touted in the '50s as "the fragrance more women wear than any other," the classic scent has been revamped and it's back with a flowery bouquet that's a mix of bergamot, jasmine and vanilla. Retro never smelled so good.

Where: $50 for 1.6 ounces at

Staying In

What: Strawberry, sweet almond, chocolate mint and caramel-scented bath supplies (right)

Why: Remember when you were little and didn't have to make excuses to stay home and take a bath on one of the most hyped nights of the year? Bring back those glorious days with Sephora Girls, Sephora's new bath flakes, beads, bubbles and body lotions for the young and young at heart.

Where: $5-$9 at or by calling 877-SEPHORA.

What: Delicious cosmetics (left)

Why: Top off that sweet-smelling bath with Stila's holiday confection perfection cosmetics collection -- it looks good enough to eat, but doesn't pack any calories. Inspired by the packaging of famous confectioners, the line is presented in shades of pale pink and baby blue with accents of ivory and wrapped in chocolate brown ribbon. Go glam for the pizza guy. Yum.

Where: $35-$36. Call 877-565-1299 for availability or go to the Web site:

What: Tuxedo T-shirt

Why: Remember those tacky T-shirts printed with tuxedo fronts from the '70s? This red tuxedo T-shirt from The Limited sure isn't it. It's fitted but not revealing and so sophisticated with its tonal ribbon stripe down the side. And it's comfy enough for wearing to the video store to rent a movie for the big night.

Where: $26.50 at The Limited in Towson Town Center, Westfield Shopping-Town (formerly Annapolis Mall), White Marsh Mall and The Mall in Columbia.
