On December 24, 2003, WILLIAM WALTER PALMER SMITH SR., "Bill" passed away peacefully from Alzheimer's disease at Loch Raven VA Hospital. Bill was born in Chester, PA, April 1, 1923. he enlisted in the US Navy during WWII and served aboard two ships. He was discharged before the end of the war due to injuries suffered during action. In 1945 he attended the Pennsylvania Military College. Bill married Matilda F. Preston "Pat" from Chester PA, October 17, 1947. In 1953 he moved to Pasadena, MD, to start a family. He began his teaching career in the late 1950s teaching at several schools throughout Baltimore and Anne Arundel Counties. During the summer vacation he worked at various jobs including Maryland Ship Building and Dry Dock Company, FMC Corporation and Bethlehem Steel Corporation culminating with his retirement in 1989. With his wife he became quite involved in collecting and restoring antiques. He is survived by his sister Elizabeth "Betty" Williams of Chester, PA, his four sons, William Smith Jr., of Edgecombe, ME, Mark and Barbara of Severna Park, MD, Greg and Elaine of Pasadena, MD, Todd and Sherri of Pasadena, MD, ten grandchildren Letisha, Todd Jr., William, Greg Jr., Elizabeth, Thomas, Eric, Ben, Jennifer and Matthew. The family will receive visitors at Singleton Funeral Home, P.A., 1 Second Avenue, S.W., (at Crain Highway) on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 P.M. The Funeral Ceremony will be held in the funeral home chapel on Monday at 1 P.M. Interment Glen Haven Memorial Park.
