FluMist vaccine available on 2 days at Savage clinic

The Howard County Health Department has received a shipment of the FluMist vaccine and will hold two walk-in flu clinics for Howard residents at the Southeastern Health Clinic in Savage from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday and 9 a.m. to noon Jan. 3.

FluMist, a live vaccine, is sprayed into the nostrils instead of being injected into muscle, which is the procedure for the inactivated form of the vaccine. FluMist is approved only for healthy children and adults, ages 5 to 49. People with weakened immune systems or long-term health problems, pregnant women, and those with a history of certain allergies, illnesses or treatments should not receive the vaccine.

Display's millionth visitor to get dinner, other prizes

The millionth visitor to Howard County General Hospital's Symphony of Lights in Columbia will get a helicopter flight above the light display, a ride in a chauffeured limousine, dinner at The Kings Contrivance restaurant, an overnight stay at The Inn at Peralynna Manor and a season pass to next year's Symphony of Lights.

The holiday display, which benefits Howard County General Hospital, is in its 10th year. Hours are from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. nightly, through Jan. 4.

County announces closings for New Year's Day holiday

Howard County government offices, courts and libraries will be closed New Year's Day.

No trash or recycling services will be available, and the landfill will be closed. Trash and recycling routes scheduled for Thursday pickup will be serviced Friday. Metered parking spaces will be free on New Year's Day.

County GOP committee seeking panel applicants

The Howard County Republican Central Committee is accepting applications for a vacancy on the committee. Applicants must be registered Republicans and Howard County residents.

The Republican Central Committee is responsible for coordinating campaigns, fund raising, registering voters and providing voters with information.

Relay for Life fund-raiser planned for June 4 and 5

Relay for Life, an overnight community fund-raiser for the American Cancer Society, is to be held June 4 and 5. Teams of eight to 15 people are needed.
