Maud-Ellen Zimmerman, 87, math teacher, activist

December 25, 2003

Maud-Ellen Zimmerman, a retired community college math teacher and conservative political activist, died in her sleep Dec. 16 at the Parkville home of her nephew after developing a cold. She was 87.

A Baltimore native, Miss Zimmerman graduated from Goucher College in 1937 with a degree in mathematics. She taught in Japan and Germany in Army-dependent schools before joining the faculty of what was then Baltimore Junior College in 1958. She taught at the school -- now Baltimore City Community College -- for more than 30 years.

A Republican, she had been chairwoman of the National Voters Interest League's Baltimore chapter and for many years championed causes opposing big government.

Plans for a memorial service were incomplete.

Miss Zimmerman, who was married briefly late in her life, is survived by her niece, Patricia E. Strickland of Chase; her nephew, Leo Zimmerman; and several cousins.
