Dayton postmaster collecting gifts for needy families

Al Payne, postmaster of Dayton, has adopted more than 500 needy families for the holidays and is collecting gifts, clothes, toys, food and money for them. Payne has been helping families during the holidays for 31 years. All donations go to the needy.

His organization, Something for Everyone, accepts donations year-round. Donations not used for Christmas are kept in an account for families in crisis. Payne is working with 19 volunteers, who will spend tonight delivering donations to the families.

Last year, he adopted 477 families.

Government offices, courts, libraries closed Christmas

Howard County government offices, courts and libraries will be closed tomorrow and New Year's Day.

No trash or recycling services will be available on these days, and the landfill will be closed. Trash and recycling routes scheduled for Thursday pickup will be serviced the next day. Metered parking spaces will be free on Christmas and New Year's Day.

Groups staff gift-wrap booth at mall to raise funds

As part of a joint fund-raising effort, the National Council of Jewish Women, Howard County Section and Howard County General Hospital's Volunteer Auxiliary are staffing a gift-wrap booth at The Mall in Columbia today. The booth, which opened the day after Thanksgiving, is on the lower level, near Lord & Taylor.

The cost is $1 to $5 per gift, depending on the size of the box. Extra-size boxes cost $7 or more.

GOP central committee accepting applications

The Howard County Republican Central Committee is accepting applications for a vacancy on the committee. Applicants must be registered Republicans and Howard County residents.

The Republican Central Committee is responsible for coordinating campaigns, fund raising, registering voters and providing them with information.

Seasonal opportunities listed for volunteers

The Volunteer Center Serving Howard County's Holiday Gift Guide 2003 lists seasonal volunteer and other needs of about 40 nonprofit and governmental organizations.

Warm clothing, furniture, unwrapped toys, nonperishable food, small appliances and other items are needed.

Volunteers are needed to help with holiday parties, wrapping gifts and other seasonal programs.

Relay for Life fund-raiser planned for June 4 and 5

Relay for Life, an overnight community fund-raiser for the American Cancer Society, is scheduled June 4 and 5. Teams of eight to 15 people are needed.

Teams can be employees, friends, members of religious groups and civic organizations or neighbors. A captain organizes and leads the team.

Money is raised from sponsors before the event, which includes taking turns walking or running around a track through the night, camping and having picnics, music, dancing and games.

The event will include a ceremony during which candles are lighted to honor or remember those affected by cancer. Candles are $10 each.

Donations are requested for Holiday Mitten Trees

The Howard County Library invites everyone to help decorate its Holiday Mitten Trees with children's mittens, scarves and hats, preferably in preschool sizes. The donations will be taken to local charities after the holidays.

Branches are open from 9:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday; and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.
