WINE OF THE WEEK

December 24, 2003|By Michael Dresser

2000 Beaulieu Vineyard Georges de Latour Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley ($85). Looking for an 11th-hour holiday splurge? This exquisite red wine, the granddaddy of all of California's expensive reserve wines, is simply superb in the variable 2000 vintage. It is announced by a complex, enticing aroma with cigar-box notes. It offers an intense, elegant and layered mix of classic cabernet flavors -- black cherry and black currant seasoned with sweet American oak. Its silky texture makes it accessible now, but it has the backbone to age gracefully for decades. It would be perfect to serve with a Christmas roast beef.
