William R. Johnson, 60, UMBC department head

William R. Johnson, a retired chairman of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County education department, died of congestive heart failure Sunday at Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C. The Severna Park resident was 60.

Born in Ashland, Wis., Dr. Johnson earned his bachelor's degree in education and a doctorate from the University of Wisconsin at Madison.

He then joined the UMBC faculty, retiring from there in 1999. He was chairman of the department of education from 1979 to 1985. His major research focused on the development of teaching and the history of education as a profession.

He wrote scholarly articles for The History of Education Quarterly.

Upon his retirement, he donated his professional library to the UMBC history department.

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Dec. 29 at Barranco & Sons Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Highway.

Survivors include his two sons, G. Braden Schumann of Groveland, Calif., and Steven Schumann of Centreville; a daughter, Deborah Schumann of Chester; a brother, Donald Johnson of Ashland; and seven grandchildren. His wife of more than 20 years, Barbara Saums Schumann, died in 2001.
