ANGELS: Agreed to three-year, $8.85 million contract with 2B Adam Kennedy.

ATHLETICS: Acquired P Chris Hammonds and cash from Yankees for P Eduardo Sierra and IF J.T Stotts.

BREWERS: Agreed to one-year contracts with P Matt Childers and P Pedro Liriano.

CUBS: Agreed to one-year contracts with free agent P Kent Mercker ($1.2 million), a former Oriole who had been with Braves, and free-agent OF Todd Hollandsworth ($1 million), who had been with Marlins. Agreed to minor league contracts with P Jamey Wright, P Gary Glover and IF Bill Selby; invited them to major league camp.

DODGERS: Agreed to one-year, $1.5 million contract with P Wilson Alvarez.

GIANTS: Named Ben Potenziano and Mark Gruesbeck assistant trainers and Rob Knepper minor league rehabilitation coordinator.

MARINERS: Agreed to four-year, $44 million contract with OF Ichiro Suzuki.

METS: Agreed to three-year, $19.5 million contract with free-agent OF Mike Cameron, who had been with Mariners.

PADRES: Agreed to one-year, $800,000 contracts with free-agent P Sterling Hitchcock, who had been with Cardinals, and P Ismael Valdes, who had been with Rangers.

PHILLIES: Agreed to one-year, $525,000 contract with P Amaury Telemaco.

TIGERS: Agreed to one-year, $650,000 contract with free-agent C Mike DiFelice, who had been with Royals. Designated P Adrian Burnside for assignment.

TWINS: Agreed to one-year, $750,000 contract with free-agent C Henry Blanco, who had been with Braves.

YANKEES: Agreed to two-year, $7.25 million contract with free-agent P Tom Gordon and two-year, $6.4 millon contract with free-agent P Paul Quantrill. Settled grievance filed by OF Bubba Trammell over $2.5 million in outstanding salary.

NCAA: Placed Chicago State on probation for two years for violations in women's basketball program under former coach Cheryl Littlejohn.

WALTER PAYTON AWARD: Honor as Division I-AA's top player went to Colgate RB Jamaal Branch.

BUCK BUCHANAN AWARD: Honor as Division I-AA's top defensive player went to Idaho State DE Jared Allen.

EDDIE ROBINSON AWARD: Honor as Division I-AA's top coach went to Wofford's Mike Ayers.

ARMY: Named Wally Ake, Stan Brock, Bruce Hardin, John Misciagna, Steve Tovar, Tucker Waugh and Eddie Wilson football assistant coaches and Clarence Holmes, Marquis Mosely and Adam Waugh football restricted duties coaches.

CARSON-NEWMAN: Named Mike Clowney football coach.

DUKE: Named Glenn Spencer football assistant coach.

HOUSTON: Agreed to new contract with football coach Art Briles.

JOHNS HOPKINS: Chad Tarabolous was named to NSCAA/Adidas Scholar All-America first team. Tarabolous was a Scholar All-East Region first-team selection; Rob Morrison was named to second team.

OHIO STATE: Suspended F Matt Sylvester from men's basketball team for one game for throwing flagrant elbow in game against Furman on Wednesday.

RUTGERS: Signed following women's lacrosse players to letters of intent: A Rachel Walker Bruce (Broadneck), A Katie Peloquin (Maryvale), M Courtney Wernick (Parkville) and D Sarah Williams (Garrison Forest).

SOUTH CAROLINA: Suspended G Josh Gonner one game for violation of team rules.

STANFORD: DT Amon Gordon will skip senior year and make himself eligible for NFL draft.

TOWSON: Mary Clare Coghlan was named CAA's volleyball Scholar-Athlete.

WAYNE STATE: Named Paul Winters football coach.

NFL: Fined Bengals QB Jon Kitna $5,000 for wearing baseball-style cap marked with cross at his post-game news conferences. Fined Chargers LB Ben Leber $7,500 for using helmet on hit against Packers QB Brett Favre.

FALCONS: Signed free-agent CB Brandon Williams. Waived T Michael Saffer. Waived FB Jeremy Allen from practice squad. Signed DE Charles Alston to practice squad.

GIANTS: Placed OT Luke Petitgout on IR. Signed CB Reggie Stephens.

TITANS: Placed QB Billy Volek on IR. Agreed to terms with QB Neil O'Donnell (Maryland).
