OPEN WHEEL RACING SERIES LLC: The group, which has agreed to purchase assets of Championship Auto Racing Teams Inc., likely will drop Indy-car series' CART name and reduce schedule from 19 to 16 races next year.


BLUE JAYS: Sent P David Gassner to Twins to complete earlier trade.

BRAVES: Agreed to terms with C Eddie Perez on two-year contract.

GIANTS: Sent P John Thomas to Twins to complete earlier trade.

INDIANS: Signed P Bobby Howry to minor league contract.

MARINERS: Agreed to terms with 3B Scott Spiezio on three-year contract.

METS: Re-signed free-agent P John Franco to one-year contract.

PHILLIES: Sent P Bobby Korecky to Twins to complete earlier trade.

ROCKIES: Signed former Orioles P Travis Driskill, P Jason Gilfillan, P Tim Harikkala and P Marc Kroon to minor league contracts.

ROYALS: Agreed to terms with C Kelly Stinnett on one-year contract.

TIGERS: Signed free-agent IF Fernando Vina, who had been with Cardinals, to two-year contract. Signed free-agent OF Rondell White, who had been with Royals, to two-year contract. Signed free agent P Al Levine, who had been with Royals, to one-year contract. Designated P Andy Van Hekken and C-OF Ben Petrick for assignment.

TWINS: Acquired P David Gassner from Blue Jays, completing July 16 trade.

YANKEES: Signed free-agent OF Gary Sheffield, who had been with Braves, to three-year contract.


WNBA: Changed lane from 12 feet to 16 feet wide. Moved three-point line to 20 feet, 6 1/4 inches from basket. Changed 30-second clock to 20 seconds when a defensive foul or violation occurs with fewer than 20 seconds left on a possession. Above 20 seconds, the clock will not be changed.


CENTRAL MICHIGAN: Announced resignation of football coach Mike DeBord.

HOFSTRA: Announced resignation of receivers coach Jeff Behrman.

JOHNS HOPKINS: DB Matt Campbell named to All-American first team. OL Matt Weeks received honorable mention.
