Most at Arundel meeting oppose rezoning airport site for homes

More than 150 people packed the Anne Arundel County Council chambers last night, most to oppose a developer's plan to turn a west county airport into a condominium and townhouse development.

Polm Cos. of Millersville wants to build 641 townhouses and condominiums at Suburban Airport, a Laurel airstrip that is home to about 70 planes. But before Rick Polm can build the development, he needs the land to be rezoned.

"The proposal is totally out of line for the area being considered," Roy A. Peeples Sr. of Laurel told the council.

The county is in the final stages of developing its small-area plan for that section of the county, and Polm Cos. officials want a council member to amend the plan so it will permit the development. As of late last night, no amendment had been introduced. The council was still hearing testimony from the nearly 50 people who had signed up to speak - nearly all of them about the development proposal.

The homes would be priced between $190,000 and $300,000, said officials marketing.

Polm is under contract to buy the land. Currently, Polm Cos. could build about two dozen homes on the 54-acre plot.
