On December 3, 2003 MRS. BERNICE AVERY HODGES, Age 65, died at Harbor Hospital from natural causes following a lengthy illness. Born October 10, 1938, in Baltimore, Mrs. Hodges attended Anne Arundel county public schools. A homemaker who cared for many foster children and others, Mrs. Hodges enjoyed shopping and cooking. Survivors include a niece Renee Hodges (Babe), whom she raised as a daughter, four brothers, William Avery, Sr. of Baltimore, John Avery of Cooksville, Dr. James Avery of Baltimore and Larry Avery of Lansing, MI; three sisters, Ruth Johnson, Wilma Young and Barbara Toler, all of Baltimore; mother-in-law, Ruby Hodges of Dayton, OH; sisters-in-law, Velma Phipps, Cheryl Hodges of Dayton, OH and Audrey Avery of Cooksville, MD; brother in-law, Donald Hodges of PA, David Young, Jr. and Percy Toler, both of Baltimore, MD and two grandchildren, Tynisha and Shannon Griffin. She was preceded in death by her husband of 18 years, Sgt. John J. Hodges; her parents, William Avery, Sr. and Helen I. Avery; three brothers, Irvin Carroway, Milton Avery and Michael Avery and one sister, Audrey L. Penn. God daughter Sonya Stevens and Personal Care Provider JoAnn Stewart. GFamily and friends may visit from noon to 7:30 P.M. Wednesday at the church. A Christian Wake for Bernice Avery Hodges, a lifelong resident of Pumphrey, MD will be held at 6:30 P.M. on December 17 at Community Baptist Church, 5912 Belle Grove Rd., Patapsco Park.
