Somebody was going to end a three-game losing streak at Towson last night.

Despite starting 2-for-16 from the field, UMBC figured out how and defeated the Tigers, 64-56, their eighth straight victory in the series.

Towson, led by 15 points from guard Mike Green, had its chance to jump on UMBC early -- when the Retrievers started 2-for-16 from the field. But the Tigers (2-5) yielded control of the game early -- allowing a 19-6 UMBC run in the middle of the first half -- rendering any late-game improvement irrelevant.

Thanks to 42 percent shooting, the Tigers' last lead came after guard Trevan Jackson's layup, 11-9 with 10:38 left in the first half. Then came the crucial six-minute stretch, during which guard Kareem Washington scored 10 of his 12 points and UMBC (3-3) took a 27-18 lead at the 5:38 mark.

The Retrievers, who got a career-high and game-high 20 points from forward John Zito, went into halftime with a 36-25 edge in a game in which 14 points was the largest margin.

"This game was there for the taking, for both teams," said UMBC coach Tom Sullivan, whose team had 17 offensive rebounds. "We were just fortunate that we were able to cushion that lead."

"We got it down to six, and we couldn't get over the hump," Towson coach Michael Hunt said, specifying last night's too-little, too-late comeback that came in the last minute. "What our team has to learn is to be efficient at the start, and not get into this situation."

This was the case for Towson in a pair of blowouts against Georgia and George Washington. It's also been the case in both losses to the Retrievers, who beat Towson on Nov. 22 in the Battle of Baltimore final.
