A Baltimore police officer putting flares around an accident on Interstate 83 was seriously injured early yesterday when he was struck just north of the city line by a man suspected of drunken driving, police said.

Officer Jeffrey Nathan Soule, 47, was taken to Maryland Shock Trauma Center with fractured legs and head injuries. He was in serious but stable condition last night, a hospital official said.

The motorist who police say struck him, Andrew Colin McCord, 25, of Westminster, was charged with drunken driving, state police said.

Soule, who joined the city police in 1998 and works in the Northern District patrol division, was dispatched to an accident scene on northbound I-83 at 2:07 a.m., said Detective Donny Moses, a city police spokesman.

When Soule realized that the crash site was in Baltimore County, he summoned the state police. He was setting flares to divert traffic when he was struck about 2:30 a.m., police said.
