December 11, 2003

Charles Noel Jr., a retired custodian, died of a blood disorder Friday at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Baltimore. He was 84.

Born in Roxboro, N.C., he served in the Army during World War II and was stationed in the Pacific.

He moved to Baltimore in 1945 and became a custodian at the old Fort Holabird in Southeast Baltimore, where he worked for 30 years. He later worked in a similar capacity at St. Agnes Hospital.

Family members said Mr. Noel, a resident of North Potomac Street, did grocery shopping for elderly and infirm residents in his East Baltimore neighborhood and took them to their medical appointments.

Services will be held at 6 tonight at First Apostolic Faith Church, 27 S. Caroline St., where he was a member.

Survivors include a foster son, Everette "Pete" Jackson of Baltimore; several nieces, among them, Carolyn Carey and Augusta Showell, both of Baltimore, who looked after him; and three grandchildren. His wife of 35 years, the former Sara Frances Jones, died in 1979.
