Reidy's 1-2 Damascus punch stops No. 1 Broadneck, 13-7

Class 4A football final

In most of the big games this season en route to a 13-0 record and the Class 4A state final, top-ranked Broadneck was superb at gaining good field position with its defense and kicking game and taking advantage of its opponents' mistakes.

Last night, the field position belonged to Damascus of Montgomery County, and the Hornets fed the Bruins a steady diet of Matt Reidy to prevail, 13-7, in the 4A championship at M&T Bank Stadium.

Reidy carried a career-high 45 times for 193 yards and both Damascus touchdowns, ran back kicks, caught passes and intercepted a pass that pretty much ended the Bruins' comeback hopes with 5:58 remaining. The state title was the fifth for the Hornets (12-2) and the first since 1996.

Broadneck (13-1) was making its first appearance in a state final after setting an Anne Arundel County record for wins in a season. A sixth playoff win would have tied the county record owned by Annapolis, which has one of just three state titles by Arundel teams.

"I'm never going to forget these guys and coaches," said Broadneck senior linebacker Tyler Moyer.

With tears streaming down his face, junior quarterback Tony Marino said how bad he felt for the seniors and how much he would miss them.

Coach Jeff Herrick said he "would never forget this team and what they accomplished and how they played so well together as a team. They deserved to be here."

Unable to get anything going offensively in the first three periods, the Bruins fell victim to a pair of long scoring drives by Damascus. After driving 80 yards, the Hornets scored a second-period touchdown on a 1-yard plunge by Reidy to lead 7-0 at the half.

Then, after Broadneck took the second-half kickoff to the Damascus 33 before punting, the winners took over at their own 15. With Reidy carrying nine of the 11 plays for 71 yards, Damascus marched 85 yards to score. Reidy raced 31 yards off a nifty block by Sean Delaney for the touchdown with 3:10 left in the third period. The kick failed and it was 13-0 Damascus.

"The thing that made him so good ... was his balance and he had good blockers who knew what they were doing," said Broadneck linebacker/guard Tim Fair. "They were one of the best-coached teams we played all season."

Broadneck's only score came in the final period on a 26-yard pass from Marino to Jordan Sokel, who in the words of Reidy "ripped it away from me," and one other defender with 9:18 left in the game.

The Bruins' offense was pretty much nonexistent the rest of the game with sophomore running back Brandon Johnson, who came in with 1,340 yards and 19 touchdowns, not a factor.

"They were pinching their tackles earlier and slanting them a lot faster than we thought, and that caused problems with our inside game," said Herrick, Anne Arundel's Coach of the Year.

"And on first and second down, we weren't getting enough yardage to keep a drive going."

Damascus controlled the ball in the first half, running 39 plays to 20 by Broadneck, but didn't score until there were 25 seconds left in the first half. The touchdown came on a 1-yard dive by Reidy, who capped an 11-play, 80-yard drive after the Bruins' Chris Desautels missed a 44-yard field goal.

Starting on their own 20, Reidy led the Swarmin' Hornets down the field, getting the call 11 times for 50 yards on the drive Reidy scored his 20th rushing touchdown and 26th overall on third-and-goal from the 1 after being stuffed from the same spot on the two previous downs.

Damascus quarterback Michael Moquin hooked up with wide receiver Travis Wertz twice for 27 yards and two first downs on the march.

Reidy ran 23 times for 79 yards in the first half while the Hornets' defense held the Bruins to 54 yards of total offense, 50 in the second period, and two first downs. Broadneck spent the first half inside its own 50 until getting to the 27 for the field-goal attempt.
