The UMBC women's team learned last night what other Towson opponents may find out the hard way: This season's revamped Tigers have a lot more bite than in the past few.

Freshman Kelly Robinson scored a career-high 25 points as the Tigers defeated host UMBC, 54-42, at RAC Arena to extend their winning streak to three, their longest since the 1998-99 season. It also ended a streak of five straight losses to the Retrievers dating to 1995.

Led by Robinson and transfers Kacy O'Brien (Virginia Tech) and Brandi Harris (Villanova), the Tigers (4-1) already have more wins than last season, when they were 3-25.

Mariana Santos scored 11 points to lead UMBC, which fell to 0-5 for the first time since the 1991-92 season.

Towson, which trailed only once at 3-0, set the tempo by making three three-pointers in the first four minutes for a 9-3 lead. The Tigers repeatedly found open looks against the UMBC zone and took full advantage, hitting seven three-pointers in the first 15 minutes en route to a 25-16 lead.

The Tigers shot 45.8 percent from three-point range overall, making 11 of 24.

"They challenge you to beat them from the perimeter, and we were fortunate tonight that we shot the ball really well," Towson coach Joe Mathews said.

Robinson hurt the Retrievers on the perimeter and in the paint. She hit a pair of three-pointers in the first six minutes and had a pretty driving layup on her way to 13 first-half points.

The 6-foot-1 forward kept it up in the second half, stepping out to hit a three-pointer and scoring on a turnaround jumper inside as Towson extended its lead to 43-25 with 12:36 left.

"She was fantastic," Mathews said.
