WINE OF THE WEEK

December 10, 2003|By Michael Dresser | Michael Dresser,SUN STAFF

2002 Trefethen Dry Riesling, Napa Valley ($15). Riesling, the great German white-wine grape, gets precious little respect in California. It seems that either it's made too sweet or not made at all. Trefethen's impressively structured riesling is a spectacular exception. It announces itself with a delightful flowery aroma, followed by generous pear, peach, apple, melon and orange flavors. It's deliciously dry without being severe. Stylistically, it's a cross between the dry rieslings of Alsace and the fruitier wines of Germany. Serve it with seafood or spicy Asian dishes.
