EDITH M. (Gates) POLAND, 79, of York, Pennsylvania died at 10:45 a.m. Wednesday, November 26 at Autumn House West in York. She was the wife of the recently deceased Chadwell B. Poland, whom she married in 1950 in England, before moving to the United States. Born August 28, 1924 in Liverpool, England, the eldest daughter of the late William E. and Ruby (Owens) Gates, she became a U.S. citizen in 1957. Due to her husband's military career, Mrs. Poland moved many times throughout her married years. She worked on and off throughout her life, but devoted most of her time to caring for her husband and four children. Mrs. Poland enjoyed a good cup of tea, as well as bowling, bingo, knitting, crocheting, and embroidery. She also liked to travel, take shopping trips, and care for house plants. She had participated in the war effort during WWII in England. Mrs. Poland is survived by two sons, Robert W. Poland of Lexington Park, and James M. Poland of York, Pennsylvania, two daughters Susan A. Conn of Nazareth, Pennsylvania and Marion L. Bauer of Weymouth, Massachusetts; 12 grandchildren; 1 great-granddaughter; and a sister Ruby Touch of Hazleton, Pennsylvania. A memorial service is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. Saturday, December 6 at Church of the Holy Spirit, 540 Joppa Farm Road, in Joppa, Maryland, with Rev. Joseph C. Simmons officiating. Burial will be at a later date. Baumeister, Orcutt & Small Mortuaries, Inc., South Queen at Jackson Street, York, is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 924 N. Colonial Avenue, York, PA 17403 or the the VNA Hospice Services of York, 218 East Market Street, York, PA 17403.
