Delegates re-elect Love as leader of delegation

Anne Arundel County's delegates unanimously re-elected Del. Mary Ann Love as their delegation chairwoman during a meeting Tuesday.

Love, a Democrat from Glen Burnie, has been chairwoman for four years. Del. David G. Boschert, a Crownsville Republican, was unanimously elected to a second year as vice chairman.

The delegation meets weekly during the session, typically to discuss local issues and meet with community leaders.

Appeals court rejects new molestation trial

Maryland's second-highest court reversed yesterday the decision of a lower court that granted a new trial to a former Glen Burnie man convicted of molesting two girls.

Rosendo Gutierrez was sentenced to 10 years in prison in 1999 by an Anne Arundel County circuit judge. Last fall, Gutierrez filed for post-conviction relief on grounds that his Alford plea was not voluntary.

A three-judge panel of the Court of Special Appeals ruled yesterday that Gutierrez made his Alford plea knowingly and that his post-conviction request should have been denied.

Gutierrez has served about six years. He was arrested in 1997 after a pilot who had seen Gutierrez on America's Most Wanted recognized him in Mexico.
