George Washington, 76, Social Security supervisor

George "Sonny" Washington, a retired Social Security Administration custodial supervisor, died of cancer Thursday at the Veterans Administration Rehabilitation and Extended Care Facility in Baltimore. The Pikesville resident was 76.

Born in Baltimore and raised in the Sandtown-Winchester neighborhood, he was a 1944 graduate of Douglass High School and served in the Army for several years.

A longtime SSA employee, Mr. Washington was a custodial supervisor at the agency's Metro Plaza facility in Baltimore at the time of his retirement in 1993.

Mr. Washington enjoyed cooking and baking and was especially known for his apple pies, maple syrup-glazed hams and kidney stew, family members said.

He was an avid Orioles fan and enjoyed listening to jazz.

Services will be held at noon today at Life Celebration Center, 630 N. Pulaski St.

Mr. Washington is survived by a daughter, Jacqueline T. Forte of Pikesville; eight grandchildren; and a great-grandson. A son, Bernard Kenneth Davenport, died in 1993.
