Two people were fatally shot last night in unrelated incidents in Baltimore -- one of them a woman who was gunned down at a Govans intersection, city police reported.

The first slaying was reported at 5:40 p.m. The woman, believed to be in her 20s, was shot in the chest by an unknown assailant at York and Benninghaus roads in the Mid-Govans community.

The victim, found lying near the intersection by officers responding to a reported shooting, was pronounced dead at 6:13 p.m. in the emergency room at Johns Hopkins Hospital, said Sgt. Richard Petrey of the homicide squad.

About 7:30 p.m., officers investigating another reported shooting in the 300 block of E. 22nd St. in Barclay found a man bleeding from a chest wound. Nearby, police recovered an undisclosed sum of money belonging to the man, and said it appeared he was shot during a robbery attempt.

He also died shortly after arrival at Johns Hopkins.

Names of the victims were not immediately released.

Anyone with information about the slayings is urged to call the homicide squad at 410-396-2100.
